An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty…

Glasshouses is a small village in Nidderdale, located one mile from the market town of Pateley Bridge and 12 miles from Harrogate. It is also approximately 1 hour's drive from York and Leeds.

The countryside which surrounds us is unspoilt and has recently been officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - ideal for walking and bird-watching with Gouthwaite Reservoir only a few miles further up the dale. Nidderdale is a must-see for anyone planning a holiday in Yorkshire, a weekend break or just a day out! When it comes to places to visit, you will be spoilt for choice:

  • Nearby, visit Brimham Rocks, now owned by the National Trust, with its unusual, natural stone outcrops such as the "Dancing Bear".
  • The World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey is approximately 15 minutes away and is also run by the National Trust. The village of Glasshouses is thought to be where the monks from the Abbey made glass.
  • Stump Cross Caverns
  • How Stean Gorge
  • An award-winning local museum in Pateley Bridge.

Wensleydale & Swaledale

Slightly further afield, take a trip to Wensleydale (home of the famous cheese and, of course, Wallace and Gromit). There's lots to see there, including the famous Aysgarth Falls triple-drop waterfalls. For Bed and Breakfast near the Falls, you might like to try Wensleydale Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast (2 mins walk from the Falls), or Cornlee Guest House, Aysgarth which overlooks Aysgarth village green. For Bed and Breakfast near Askrigg, self-catering cottages in Wensleydale and self-catering cottages in Swaledale, you might like to visit Askrigg Cottages. For Bed & Breakfast in Askrigg, Thornsgill House offers a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The capital of Upper Wensleydale is Hawes, where you can see Wensleydale Cheese being made at the Creamery. Fair View Country Guest House, Hawes, offers Bed & Breakfast in an elegant, Victorian House setting. Thorney Mire Barn, close to the hamlet of Appersett, offers outstanding 5 Diamonds Gold Award Bed & Breakfast accommodation near Hawes. If you prefer the freedom of self-catering, The Old Hall is a Grade II Listed building of character, offering spacious self-catering accommodation in Bainbridge, near Hawes. Two Dales Cottages offer two self-catering holiday cottages - one in Bainbridge, Wensleydale and one Thwaite, Swaledale.

Herriot Country & the North York Moors

The charming market town of Thirsk is home to the former veterinary surgery of Alf Wight, (alias author James Herriot), whose books about his working life as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales were adapted for television in the All Creatures Great and Small series . The Thirsk area is an excellent central base from which to explore the North York Moors to the east or the Yorkshire Dales to the west. The Nag's Head Inn, Pickhill, near Thirsk is a traditional country residential inn offering accommodation, dining in their lounge bar or restaurant, a wide range of sporting breaks and activity breaks, and facilities for conferences and corporate team building - and all conveniently located just a few minutes from the A1, exactly half way between London and Edinburgh.

The National Trust shops at Fountains Abbey and in York both stock our Country Wines.
